What this means
Optional short-term adjunct for adults with insomnia symptoms using a standardized ashwagandha root extract comparable to products studied for at least several weeks; not a replacement for cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia.
How to use it: If considering ashwagandha for sleep, use a clearly labeled standardized root extract rather than translating trial doses into a homemade preparation. Persistent insomnia is better addressed with CBT-I, which has substantially stronger evidence and is recommended as first-line treatment.
Safety & cautions
Avoid ashwagandha during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is not recommended around surgery or for people with autoimmune or thyroid disorders without clinician review. It can cause drowsiness, stomach upset, diarrhea, or vomiting; rare liver injury has been reported. Review use with a clinician if you take sedatives, anticonvulsants, thyroid medicines, immunosuppressants, diabetes medicines, or blood-pressure medicines.

Household preparations
Practical ways to use the ingredient may not provide the same form or amount discussed in the evidence.
