Arnica has a long history of topical use for localized muscle pain, and EMA recognizes that traditional use. This is not the same as strong proof of effectiveness: small exercise studies have produced conflicting results, so the claim remains traditional-use only.
Traditional topical relief of localized minor muscle pain using a labeled arnica-flower semi-solid or liquid preparation on intact skin; not an oral product, not homeopathic arnica, and not a proven treatment for exercise-induced muscle damage.
How to use it: Use only a labeled topical arnica product as directed and keep the route external. Do not swallow arnica or treat a homeopathic arnica product as equivalent to the topical herbal preparations covered by the EMA traditional-use conclusion. Stop if the skin becomes irritated.
Topical arnica can cause allergic skin reactions including itching, redness, or eczema. Avoid use on damaged or irritated skin unless the product label specifically permits it, and avoid use if you are allergic to arnica or related Asteraceae-family plants.
